Budachów z lotu ptaka od południa

Budachów is over 700 years old – the village’s beginnings

Budachów is a village with medieval roots. Although today it is a small village surrounded by the forests of the Lubusz region, its history goes back more than seven centuries. The first records of the village appear in documents from the early 14th century.

Budachów in the Middle Ages

According to historical material published by the Bytnica Municipal Office, the earliest mention of Budachów dates from 1304.

This means the village already existed over 700 years ago, at a time when Central Europe was shaped by medieval duchies, bishoprics and feudal estates.

It should be noted, however, that other historical studies give 1309 and the name Budechow as the earliest record. This discrepancy needs further research in the original documents.

It does not change the basic fact: Budachów is a place with a very long, documented history.

A village in a historic borderland

For centuries, the area of today’s Bytnica municipality was a borderland where the influences of different states, cultures and traditions met.

The history of this area is linked to the Krosno Land, whose history reaches back to medieval times.

From the 12th and 13th centuries, settlement and political changes took place as Brandenburg expanded into the lands east of the Oder.

Budachów developed in this setting as a village based on farming and forestry.

From an old estate to today’s village

Over the following centuries, Budachów was closely tied to a landed estate.

Monuments surviving from that era include, above all, the manor park, the Church of St Joseph and the old smithy.

Many historic buildings have not survived, but the layout of the village and the remains of the former manor still recall its past.

Budachów was the seat of its own gromada

A little-known part of the village’s history is its post-war administrative role.

In 1954, as part of a reform of Poland’s administrative divisions, the gromada of Budachów was created.

It was an administrative unit based in our village.

It included Budachów, Dobrosułów and Drzewica.

The gromada existed until 1968. It was abolished by a resolution of 26 April 1968, which came into force on 1 July of that year.

Since 1973 Budachów has belonged to the re-established Bytnica municipality.

History written in the landscape

Today, monuments, old trees, old roads and surviving buildings recall the village’s centuries-long history.

One of the most valuable places is the historic manor park, whose oldest trees remember the days of the old estate.

But the history of Budachów is not only about buildings and official documents.

It is also the story of its residents, their families, farms, schools, organisations and local traditions.

It is worth exploring and recording the history of Budachów to preserve it for future generations. Every old photograph, document and memory can be an important part of our village’s story.

We give 1304 as the date of the first mention following the Bytnica Municipal Office. Other studies give 1309; settling this requires finding the original document.
